Laurie Simons, MA
Laurie is a licensed mental health counselor, author, and video/TV producer. She works with parents and families who are raising challenging and special-needs children. Laurie has produced over 20 films/videos on a variety of subjects. In 2003, she traveled to Bolivia to produce a short promotional video for International Smile Power. Laurie is the founder of Parent Television Network, and co-founder of Family Interplay Education.
Judy Chambers
Judy is a retired school teacher. In 2000, she served as secretary for Smile Power. Since then, she has traveled to Nepal, Cook Islands, Yap, Bolivia, Jamaica, and Uganda. Judy works wherever she is needed. Sometimes she teaches tooth brushing, and other times she sterilizes instruments. In addition to clinical tasks, Judy often brings art supplies so that she can do art projects with the children who live in the places she visits.
Susan Evans
Susan graduated from the University of Washington with a business administration (marketing) degree. Susan has worked as a catering and sales manager for Consolidated Restaurants, and as a regional sales manager for James River Paper Corp. Susan joined Smile Power 10 years ago to do work that connects students in our local public and at-risk schools with children in need around the world. To this end, Susan has delivered gifts from local students to children in Bolivia, Mexico, and Uganda. Susan currently works as a volunteer art teacher and community outreach facilitator at Echo Glen Detention Center.
Ellen Reh, DDS
Ellen graduated from the University of Washington Dental School in 2000, and now owns a practice in Bellevue, Washington. Ellen became involved with Smile Power in 2004, and her first trip was to Jamaica in 2005, She enjoyed it so much, she went back in both 2006 and 2007! Ellen then traveled to Uganda in 2007, and looks forward to traveling to Bolivia. Ellen says “My involvement with Smile Power has been full of incredible, life-changing experiences.”
Jerri Shinn
Jerri is a registered nurse. She graduated from the University of Washington with her bachelor’s degree in nursing, and received a certificate in public health nursing. During the late ’60s and early ’70s she assisted in the development of the Holly Park Neighborhood Health Center grassroots medical clinic. She is the cofounder of International Smile Power and has traveled to many developing countries, providing medical and dental assistance to people in underserved communities. Her passion is to help local health services achieve their own independence.
Jeff Marks
Jeff graduated from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1998. He then completed a two-year hospital-based residency in pediatric dentistry at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He has a private practice in Seattle and is on the clinical and surgical staff at both Seattle Children's Hospital and the University of Washington. Jeff volunteered in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. He also provided dental care and balloon animals for children in Nepal. He is traveling to Tanzania with International Smile Power in November 2009.
Jennifer Walsh Fisher
Jen is a graduate of the State University of New York at Oneonta with a B.S. degree in business economics and a minor in English. She also earned an MBA degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Jen has spent the last 17 years in finance, accounting, and strategy with companies ranging from start-ups to multi-nationals and has consulted for the last four years, most recently with Resources Global Professionals. An advocate for medical access for all, Jen is thrilled to merge her extensive for-profit experience with her calling to serve with International Smile Power.
