Local couple wins National Jefferson Award and the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Award, known as the Nobel Prize for public and community service.

Washington D.C. - June 17, 2003 - Annually, more than 15,000 are nominated to receive Jefferson Awards. On June 17th, Seattle area residents, Dr. Sherwin Shinn, DDS and Jerri Shinn, RN, founders of the International Smile Power Foundation, were among the five selected to receive the National Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Award. Established in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft, Jr. and Sam Beard, the National Jefferson Awards annually honor outstanding Public Servants and America's "Unsung Heroes" who make a difference including: Barbara Bush, Walter Cronkite, Oprah Winfrey, Paul Newman and Lance Armstrong. The National Jefferson Award recipients will be featured in the annual Jefferson Awards National Television Special. This television special will be available for airing by all stations after July 15, 2003.
